Realigning Agriculture to Improve Nutrition (RAIN) Project
Terms of Reference for internship
Concern has been working in Zambia since 2002 implementing livelihoods, HIV and AIDS and nutrition programmes. In Mumbwa District, Central Province, Concern Zambia is implementing the Realigning Agriculture to Improve Nutrition Project (RAIN) that focuses on reducing the prevalence of stunting in children by promoting improved nutrition during the critical period from conception to 23 months of age. Concern is also a member of the consortium (SUN Fund) responsible for the scaling up of nutrition under the Most Critical 1000 Days Program through capacity building and support to the key line Ministries, nutrition planning and activities in 14 pilot Districts and support for related operations and innovations research. In Western Province; Mongu, Limilunga, Luampa, Kaoma, Nalolo and Senanga districts; Concern is implementing the Integrated Poverty Reduction and Women Empowerment Programme (IPRWEP) that mainly targets women and focuses on household asset strengthening, capacity building of local institutions, women’s empowerment, nutrition promotion and disaster risk reduction (DRR). The Conservation Agriculture (CA) Project promotes sustainable agriculture with the poorest farmers in these marginal areas. In the Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement in Kaoma District, Concern also partners with UNHCR to support the local integration of former Angolan Refugees.
Concern has been implementing the Realigning Agriculture to Improve Nutrition (RAIN) programme in Mumbwa since 2011, which aims to reduce the prevalence of stunting by integrating agriculture, nutrition and women empowerment, including linkages to market activities. The project is funded by Irish AID and Kerry Group implemented in 4 wards in Mumbwa. The project was for duration of five years (2011 – 2015) and implementation of project activities ended in August 2015 when all partner staff from Mumbwa Child Development Agency (MCDA) was withdrawn from the participating wards.  The project funding was extended to December 2016; September 2015 to December 2016 will mainly have project monitoring and sustainability activities. The Project Support Officer (PSO) in close coordination with key line government departments at district and field level has been monitoring the project. The project has approximately 4,500 beneficiaries with 181 Smallholder Model Farmers; trained in agriculture, and 170 Community Health Volunteers trained in Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF).
Activities have continued among the beneficiaries of the project which are monthly or bi-monthly group meetings, refresher trainings, input distribution and farming with the help of the PSO and government extension officers. Monitoring of the activities is carried out by the project staff and more staff is needed to ensure sustainability of the groups after the exit of the organization.
Objectives of the Internship
The objective of this internship is to intensify on the monitoring of the beneficiaries of the project in all areas of the implementation (nutrition/ health; agriculture; HIV/AIDS; gender; and marketing) and ensure that sustainability areas of the project are implemented.
Specific tasks of the internship
The specific tasks of the consultancy are:
  • To carry out monitoring of beneficiary fields and gardens including distribution and collection of monitoring forms
  • To monitor and attend group level meetings
  • To give technical consultations on crop and livestock production
  • To organize and facilitate refresher trainings for SMF and CHV in partnership with government line ministries
  • To distribute inputs to the beneficiaries
  • To participate in various RAIN activities
  • To be assigned other roles in assisting the research on relationship between production and increase in dietary diversity
Expected Outputs (Deliverables)
  • A monthly activity report
The intern should be pursuing a diploma or degree in either nutrition or crop sciences.
The internship will take place from 9st May 2016 until 31th July, 2016 and will be based in Mumbwa.
Lines of Communication
The interns will report to the Project Support Officer and District Programme Coordinator.
