JOB TITLE: Research Assistant
REPORTING TO: Program Officer
The Population Council’s Poverty, Gender and Youth program is evaluating an Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) for vulnerable adolescent girls in Zambia to help them avoid early marriages; sexually transmitted infections, including HIV; and unintended pregnancy. This program is designed to find the best ways to improve girls’ social, health, and economic resources so that they can stay in school longer; avoid early marriages; delay sexual activity; and prevent unintended pregnancy, HIV, and other STIs. To improve these outcomes, the Council rigorously evaluates, through research, the AGEP program on a yearly basis in all program sites. The Council is currently looking to hire dedicated females to be temporarily engaged as research assistants for a period of six months from July 2016 to December 2016 under the AGEP research component. The job will include data collection through interviews, anaemia testing, and measuring height and weight of program participants. Successful individuals will be required to work in Lusaka and travel extensively to other parts of the country.
Major Responsibilities
  1. Locate participants (both in urban and rural areas) and conduct genuine and quality data collection through interviews as assigned by the supervisors using Android Tablets.
  2. Conduct on the spot anaemia testing with participants.
  3. Follow all data collection procedures while adhering to research ethics governing research with human participants.
  4. Ensure privacy and confidentiality of all study participants.
  5. Keep all data collection instruments, used and unused, in a confidential manner and ensure that non-research persons do not have access to these. Maintain study equipment and materials.
  6. Must be able to ask questions in accordance with instructions to obtain accurate information from program participants.
  7. Identify and report any problems that may occur in the field while collecting data.
  8. Ensure that the data collected is submitted to supervisors in a timely manner and contribute to the team’s data collection success as needed.
  • Must be readily available to travel to different parts of the country for at least six (06) months starting July 2016.
  • Grade 12 certificate.
  • Minimum Diploma in Social Work or related field.
  • Experience interviewing participants and data collection.
  • Be in possession of Psychosocial training certification from a recognized institution.
  • Proficiency in reading and speaking of English, Bemba, Nyanja, Kaonde a plus.
