Internship - Investigation Division/Analysis - Office of the Prosecutor

Contract Duration
Interns are required to work full time for a period between three and six months (to be agreed to prior to commencement). Internship placements shall not be extended beyond six months.

Organisational Context

The Office of the Prosecutor investigates and prosecutes genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by nationals of a State Party or on the territory of a State Party on or after 1 July 2002, the date of entry into force of the Rome Statute.
The Investigation Division (ID), under the overall management of its Director and management team, provides the investigative component of the integrated team which conducts the Office’s investigations and prosecutions under the responsibility of PD’s Senior Trial Lawyer. ID recruits, trains and monitors the performance of investigators, analysts and data inputters within the integrated team.

Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate will be assigned to work within an investigative team, supporting its evidence collection and/or analytical activities.
Under the supervision of the Team Leader, the Head of the IAS or a designated analyst, and in compliance with the relevant protocols and methods, the candidate will perform one or more of the following duties:
  • Databases – Data entry and data cleaning (including structured and unstructured data) for relevant databases, such as the Fact Analysis Database (FAD) that collates and integrates evidence for every case by incidents, alleged perpetrators, victims, locations, groups and other issues relevant to the investigation.
  • Crime pattern – Support for crime pattern monitoring and analysis for situations and cases under investigation, with the required collection of information from open or other sources, data entry and data cleaning, and storage of the relevant sources, using the required software tools.
  • Telecommunications – Data entry and data processing to support the analysis of telecommunications and similar structured data (financial or other) through relevant software and databases.
  • Searches – Conducts searches in databases or open sources as required to support investigations and analysis.
  • Other – Any other support task required to assist investigators and analysis, including the production of summaries and collations, corroboration checks, and sourcing of reports or other analytical products.

Required Qualifications
Education:
All Candidates must have a degree or be in the final stages of their studies at a recognised university. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance.

Experience:
Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Court may be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Confidentiality – Ability to keep strict confidentiality about the relevant information and procedures.
  • Accuracy – Excellent attention to detail and accuracy when processing information.
  • Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments.
  • Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • Has acquired a good standard of computer skills (including Microsoft Office applications, and databases).

Knowledge of Languages:
Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English, is required. Working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

Remuneration
Please note that the ICC is not able to provide participants in the Internship Programme with remuneration, nor is it possible to provide any reimbursement for any expenses incurred during the internship. Accordingly, applicants must have the necessary resources or other financial support for the duration of the internship for which they have been selected.
