REVISER - ENGLISH at African Union

The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a new partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.
In seeking to achieve these objectives, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others, the implementation of new organization structure and the filling of vacant posts.
The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the short-term position of Reviser – English, within the Directorate of Conference Management and Publications

  3. Job Purpose
  4. To check and revise all texts translated from French into English, ensure meaningful translation and provide guideline to translators to ensure AU documents conform to acceptable international standards and norms
  6. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  7. Check and revise all texts translated from French into English according to the original to ensure accurate (terminology, style, etc.) and meaningful translation;
  8. Provide detailed guidelines to Translators in the Translation Unit, to ensure that AU’s documents conform to acceptable international standards and norms and provide feedback to translators.
  9. Consult all relevant sources, technical experts and authors of texts;
  10. Select and compile terminological materials required for translation and make them available to the Translators;
  11. Counsel and assist the in-house Freelance Translators;
  12. Translate documents whenever requested;
  13. Use modern translation software and tools such as MultiTrans.
  14. Carry out any other related duties that may be assigned by the Director.

  • Excellent command of English and thorough knowledge of French

  • Knowledge in advance technology related with computer aided translation tools, terminology management and workflow system

  • Ability to manage and coach a team of external translators, planning, coordinating and supervising their work
  • Knowledge and Understanding
  • Must have an excellent knowledge of French and English;
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in Translation
  • A minimum of least 7 years, progressively responsible professional experience in revision, of which at least 5 years should have been gained in an international organization.
  • Demonstrated skills in translating and revising substantive documents for external audiences.
  • Extensive vocabulary coupled with a keen sense of semantics

6.   Education Qualification Required
Candidates must have a minimum of University degree in Language studies or Translation or. Higher qualification would be an added advantage

7.   Language Requirement:
Proficiency in French and English as African Union working languages, fluency in additional AU official working language would be an added advantage.

8.   Tenure of Appointment: The appointment will be made on Regular contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve (12) months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.

10. Remuneration:
Indicative basic salary of US$40,413.00 (P4 Step 1) per annum plus other related entitlements such as post adjustment (46% of basic salary), Housing allowance ($16,819.20 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc. for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
