DETAILED TERMS OF REFERENCE RESEARCH ASSOCIATE GENDER AND YOUTH
Position Title: Research Associate – Gender and Youth
Hiring institution: Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute (IAPRI)
Reporting to: Research Director
1.0 Job Description
IAPRI is seeking a full-time mid-level Gender and Youth Research Associate. The Gender and Youth Research Associate will advise on gender and youth research approaches and methodologies, ensure that research instruments are designed to adequately collect gender and youth disaggregated information and that research teams collect information without gender-biases. The successful candidate will lead IAPRI’s Gender and Youth thematic area of research as well as contribute to related research across other thematic research areas, which include: Market Development and Trade, Public Policy and Spending, Productivity and Poverty Reduction, Agriculture, Food and Nutrition, and Climate Change and Natural Resources Management.
2.0 Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to and under the supervision of the Research Director, the Research Associate will undertake the following research
2.1 Gender
  • The development of IAPRI’s gender policy research;
  • Training of IAPRI staff in gender issues;
  • Provide support to researchers interested in incorporating gender into their work;
  • In collaboration with other IAPRI researchers conduct gender sensitive value chain analysis;
  • Identify new areas for concentrated research on gender;
  • Recommending incorporation of gender considerations in IAPRI’s work plan;
  • Identification of gender disaggregated monitoring, learning, and action indicators to ensure relevant data is collected and analyzed, and gender related progress/outcomes tracked;
  • Disseminate information about IAPRI’s work on gender to external audiences; and
  • Link with relevant gender policy research within Zambia and the region.
2.2 Youth
  • Read and provide technical oversight to policy research focused on youth
  • Provide support to researchers interested in incorporating youth into their work;
  • Identify new areas for concentrated research on youth and agriculture;
  • Recommending incorporation of youth and agriculture issues in IAPRI’s work plan;
  • Identification of age disaggregated monitoring, learning, and action indicators to ensure relevant data are collected and analyzed;
  • Disseminate information about IAPRI’s work on youth and agriculture to external audiences; and
  • Link with relevant youth and agriculture policy research within Zambia and the region.
3.0 Expected outputs:
The research associate will be expected to produce the following outputs:
  • IAPRI working papers, policy briefs/advisory notes and technical reports.
  • Periodic reports including trip reports
  • Peer reviewed journal articles
  • Provide an input into the production of infographics, presentations and documentaries.
4.0 Qualifications and Experience:
  • Master’s Degree in agricultural economics, international development, gender studies, development economics, international affairs, or related field;
  • Demonstrate strong interest in gender and youth research. Ability to effectively integrate gender and youth considerations into programming that is not explicitly focused on gender or youth.
  • Ensure that gender and youth is mainstreamed across IAPRI’s research and outreach programme and activities.
  • Experience providing training, capacity building and technical assistance for research and programming related to gender and youth will be an added advantage.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team.
5.0 Other Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative methods (i.e. statistics, econometrics), including the use of statistical software applications such as STATA or SPSS.
