SAFE Commercialisation Manager, Zambia

We're looking for a SAFE Commercialization Manager (Zambia)
TechnoServe works with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses and industries. We are a nonprofit organization that develops business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital and markets. Our work is rooted in the idea that given the opportunity, hardworking men and women in even the poorest places can generate income, jobs and wealth for their families and communities. With more than four decades of proven results, we believe in the power of private enterprise to transform lives.
Solutions for African Food Enterprises (SAFE) is a program implemented in Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia and Tanzania through a partnership of USAID, TechnoServe and Partners in Food Solutions (PFS). PFS is a non-profit organization which links expertise of volunteer employees from General Mills, Cargill, Royal Dutch DSM, B├╝hler and The Hershey Company, with local food processors. SAFE seeks to increase competitiveness of the African food processing sector to expand availability of affordable and nutritious foods. It does this through (i) provision of technical and business support to small and growing businesses (SGBs) in the food processing sector, linking them as appropriate to remote assistance through PFS; (ii) design and delivery, in partnership with local service providers, of sector-wide trainings for processors.
The 2015 external review of SAFE highlighted that, outside of specific complementary and therapeutic foods targeted to institutional buyers, the program has had limited impact to date on increasing the availability of nutritious foods in markets characterized by higher levels of food insecurity among the consumer population. For the most part the processors that SAFE works with either currently sell to, or aspire to reach, national retail chains and the nutritious foods they produce are neither targeting nor reaching low-income, food insecure populations.
Commercialization of nutrition, including effective market demand and supply, is the most critical enabler for the purchase and consumption of nutritional goods. A key concept is that this should be business oriented and therefore we should market the product and not nutrition. Extending supported SGBs' outreach to food-insecure consumers will involve a change in production, packaging, distribution, pricing, and promotional strategies. Specifically, reaching lower-income markets with nutritional products requires marketing to the informal sector and development of new and innovative sales and distribution channels. TechnoServe/PFS has some experience in this area in Zambia: through the THRIVE program TechnoServe has mobilized and trained more than 100 Community Based Distributors who successfully and profitably sell HEPS to HIV patients and other consumers in their communities; under the PEPZ program TechnoServe is supporting more than 100 informal retailers and micro-agents and piloting informal franchising approaches; two companies supported by SAFE, are testing a micro-retailer approach for their products to lower income individuals in peri-urban markets.
