ROLE: Volunteer Project Officer
LOCATION: Lusaka, Zambia.
Summary of Position:
The Sani Foundation is an indigenous Zambian NGO whose vision is to facilitate the full inclusion of both rural and urban youth with intellectual disabilities into all aspects of society. People with intellectual disabilities are among the most marginalised population groups globally, and the Foundation is currently implementing the Sunshine Zambia Project (visit our Facebook page) that provides relevant and holistic education and training to prepare young adults for employment and independence within their community.
The Project Officer (PO) builds relationships with clients, partners and allies and, in coordination with them and program staff, drives the development of coalition-wide communications, media, and advocacy work. The PO will work with the Monitoring Evaluation and Learning staff, Advocacy and Communication staff to develop and implements the strategic communications of Sani Foundation and its projects—including dynamic storytelling, media and public outreach—to support its sensitization and legislative advocacy. The Project Officer will be accountable to the Executive Director for overall leadership, management and performance of the Sani Foundation projects.
Responsibilities include:
Project Management
  • Maintaining a close relationship with member’s families and care-givers.
  • Manage, supervise and control multiple project through project life cycle.
  • Manage and facilitate flow of essential information among team members.
  • Maintain project calendar and milestones.
  • Track and manage budget for each project working with the Executive Director and the management team.
  • Assist in Foundation leadership to adapt analytical approach to establish resource need and thoroughly examine alternative execution choices.
  • Identify trends and shifts in project implementation patterns to inform changes or adjustments, where necessary.
  • Establish and record policies and procedures for maintaining and using tools and processes, ensuring data integrity and consistent use across the organisation.
  • Establish user’s feedback channels to allow for continual refinement of tools and processes.
Advocacy and Communication
  • The PO is one of the public faces of the project and needs to create and maintain a positive image of the project.
  • Public relations and awareness are key components of this position.
  • Working with Sani Foundation board, management and key program and advocacy staff to develop and lead national, regional, or localized advocacy communications activities for top priority issues
    Working with partners and clients in developing coalition strategy and advocacy tactics including traditional and social media efforts
  • Identifying, developing, and fostering partnerships with new and diverse groups and organizations
  • Driving innovative storytelling projects involving clients and affected communities and consistently seeking out new and compelling ways to project and publicize these stories
  • Using market research/polls and contracts or conducting focus groups/quantitative studies to help determine message strategies and to target optimal audiences efficiently for program outreach
  • When necessary develop materials, e.g. brochures, fliers advertising material and arrange printing of these with the approval of the board and the Executive Director
  • Meticulous records to be kept of all communication with donors, care-givers, fund raising activities.
Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Conducting a baseline survey to collect relevant information on experiences and perceptions of ID in relation to the job market.
  • Development of data collection tools and capacity building project staff in the use of the tools developed in order for periodic data to be adequately collected within the lifespan of the project
  • Periodic documentation of data to generate information that can be used as lessons and best practices during and after the project – case studies, reports, articles etc.
  • To collect and document stories on members’ and project successes, challenges and lessons learnt
  • To participate in members’ assessment, evaluation and to ensure that their individual progress is monitored and documented.
  • Produce narrative product reports
  • To participate in certain aspects of fundraising activities when needed.
Key Skills and Requirements:
  • Degree in Development Studies, Public Policy, Law or equivalents
